CPCNC Meetings

Our meetings are usually held on the 2nd Thursday of the month. We attempt to provide at least one educational program every 2 months.

  • It was great to see many of you at the Union Home Show. From the feedback we received we felt that the event was a trememdous success for all attendees. There was a lot of interest in the coop's activities, with a strong encouragement to keep working towards bringing the solar farm to the community. In addition to meeting many new people, we took the opportunity to do some great networking with local green businesses that could result in some interesting events this year.

__________

Nevada County Science Fair

The CPCNC was extremely pleased to be able to award prizes at the Nevada County Science Fair. in April 2008.  Although there were a wide selection of outstanding entries, our goal is to encourage interest in Conservation and Renewable Energy Production, so we limited awards to entries that met this criteria.

Please join us in congratulating the winners

4th and 5th Grades - $50 Prizes

Nico Aragon from Deer Creek School - Energy Conservation: “Effects of different shapes on aerodynamic drag” The judges felt that experiments of this type could lead to improved vehicle shapes which would increase fuel economy. We were very impressed with the neat construction of the fan attachment to the plastic bottle.

Jack Malek from Cottage Hill School - Renewable Energy: “Solar Energy how it works”  The judges were impressed with the practical demonstration and the way that several solar applications were shown.

___________

6th to 8th Grades - $50 Prizes

Zachary Kober from Union Hill School - Renewable Energy: “The Power of Nuts”  The judges thought that there was very good background research along with a clean presentation and a thoughtful conclusion.
Maybe squirrels have something to teach us about getting energy from nuts.

Samantha Kober from Union Hill - Renewable Energy:  “Effects of shade on solar panel electrical output”  The judges were impressed by the selection, because this is a very real problem that greatly reduces solar panel efficency. Samantha did some very thorough research and very thoughtful conclusions.

___________

$75 Prize Cheyanne Toney from Union Hill School - Renewable Energy: bio-fuel related, “Effect of diesel and bio-diesel on burn time” The judges liked way the experiment was set up, the back up data and the discussion of an application to make engines run cooler.

$100 Prize Ian Martinez from 7 Hills School - Renewable Energy: “Pine Needles and Oak Leaves as a source of renewable energy” The judges felt this was very applicable to the area we live in and were very impressed with the thoughtful approach to site selection and sample preparation. This along with careful measurement taking and discussion of possible application to electricity generation completed a very clean presentation.

Congratulations to all the entrants, the quality was extremely high - They are all winners.

We hope to be able to participate again next year and to continue encouraging our youth to understand and contribute to practical solutions for our clean energy challenges.
